National Pending Case Forecast

Dashed line = linear regression over all available JPML monthly data, projected 6 months ahead. Pink bars show the historical LOESS trend; orange bars are regression projections; shaded band = 95% prediction interval.

Trend Label Definitions

Labels are self-relative — each MDL is measured against its own average caseload, so a large MDL must change proportionally more to be flagged as rapidly moving.

TREND DIRECTION

⬆ Rapidly Rising Monthly slope > +10% of the MDL's own average — an unusually fast acceleration. ↑ Rising Monthly slope between +3% and +10% — steady, notable growth. → Stable Monthly slope within ±3% — no meaningful directional change. ↓ Declining Monthly slope between −3% and −10% — steady, notable decrease. ⬇ Rapidly Declining Monthly slope < −10% of the MDL's own average — an unusually fast contraction.

ACCELERATION (ACCEL COLUMN)

↗ Accel. The rate of change is speeding up — second half of the window moved faster than the first. A rising MDL getting faster, or a declining MDL accelerating downward. ~ Steady The rate of change is consistent throughout the window — no meaningful difference between early and recent months. ↘ Decel. The rate of change is slowing down — second half of the window moved slower than the first. A declining MDL may be stabilizing; a rising one may be peaking.

Top 10 Rising MDLs

Strongest upward trend over last 12 months. Accel shows whether the rate of change is itself speeding up or slowing. R² = model reliability.

Top 10 Declining MDLs

Strongest downward trend over last 12 months. Accel shows whether the rate of decline is speeding up or easing.

Anomalous Months

Months where a single MDL's pending count deviated more than 2 standard errors from its own regression line — statistically out-of-character spikes or drops that may signal a mass filing event, bellwether trial, settlement wave, or data artifact. Sorted by magnitude of deviation. Only 1 worst month shown per MDL.

CourtListener Free Law Project

Free public API providing MDL docket metadata matched by docket number: judge assignments, lead plaintiff law firms, case filing dates, and docket URLs. Powers the Court Docket Intelligence card on the Forecasting tab. Refresh with python scripts/fetch_courtlistener.py --force.

📂
RECAP Archive Free Law Project

Crowd-sourced mirror of PACER federal court documents. CourtListener's firm and attorney data is populated from RECAP — MDLs that appear in RECAP have richer enrichment data (law firms, parties) than those that don't.
