Pending-Action Trajectories

Fitted changes across the selected available reports.

Direction

Include Smaller MDLs with Falling Counts

Up to 20 MDLs listed in the selected end report with a negative fitted slope and at least four observations in the selected range. The main list requires six observations, at least 10 pending actions, and a fitted decline over 3% of its average pending count per available report. A decline does not establish a disposition.

One observation per MDL, ordered by its absolute difference from the fitted line.

Pending actions divided by total actions in the latest JPML month; includes MDLs with at least 50 total actions.

Methods: Fitted Trends
Window and Eligibility
Each line uses the available JPML district reports in the selected date range. Report positions, not elapsed calendar months, define the horizontal axis; intervals can be irregular. A missing MDL listing is omitted without closing its position in the report sequence. An uncollected calendar month is not imputed as zero. The main MDL lists require six observations and at least 10 pending actions in the selected end report.
Fitted Change per Available Report
A straight line summarizes the observed pending counts. The rise or fall must exceed 3% of that MDL's average count per available report to appear in the main lists. The 10% label marks a larger calculated rate.
Earlier and Later Halves
Separate lines are fitted to each half of the available observations. The label changes when their changes per available report differ by more than 3% of the MDL's average pending count. Line fit (R²) describes how closely a line follows these observed counts; it does not test future reliability.
Differences from the Line
Up to 15 MDLs have one observation more than twice the residual standard error from their fitted line, ordered by absolute difference. Fitted counts are dashboard calculations and may be negative; they are never clipped to zero or presented as reported counts. Differences use the same unrounded fit; percentages are unavailable when the fit is zero or negative. This descriptive threshold is not a significance test or proof of a data error.
District Counts
District pending counts are summed by month. At least six observations and a latest-report listing are required for a fitted line. Up to eight positive and eight negative fitted changes are shown; a district absent from a report is not imputed as zero.

Summary Sources and Methods

Population and Shares
Summary includes every MDL listed for the selected month in the JPML district report, including zero pending actions. MDL shares use that count; pending-action shares use that month's pending total. Trends exclusions do not apply here. Percentages are calculated before rounding; a zero denominator is unavailable.
MDL Size and Concentration
Use the Summary control to group MDLs by reported pending actions or reported total actions. Total actions include pending actions and actions no longer pending. The concentration figure is the smallest number of MDLs whose combined counts reach at least 80% of the selected action total.
Official Docket Types
Categories come from the same-date JPML Docket Type report. Counts and action shares use all listed MDLs, including an Unknown group when a classification is missing. Titles are not used to infer categories.
Age Since Reported Transfer
Age runs from the source's Date Transferred to the selected month's source date. It describes MDL dockets, not the age or duration of their constituent actions. Calendar anniversaries define the bands; February 29 becomes February 28 in non-leap years. Fractional years use the interval between anniversaries. The median weights each MDL equally. Blank, invalid, and future dates remain unknown and are excluded from the median.
Transferee Districts Hosting MDLs
Map shading shows the number of MDLs listed in each transferee district for the selected report. Zero means no MDLs are listed there; it does not establish zero underlying actions or district workload. Select a shaded district or a district in the expandable table to see its listed MDLs, titles, judges, and action counts. Alaska, Hawaii, and territories use separate map boxes. If verified boundaries are unavailable, a ranked district view appears instead. The map does not describe where plaintiffs live or where actions were filed.
Enrichment Coverage
Types and transfer dates use available same-date reports. MDL Number reports can supply transfer dates when a Docket Type report is missing. Conflicting fields remain unknown. Missing metadata does not remove an MDL from the population. Records are joined by report date and MDL number, with their source versions retained.
Historical Statistics
Calendar-year, fiscal-year, cumulative, and irregular reporting periods retain their printed definitions. Blank cells remain unreported. The History tables reproduce verified source tables; they are not additional monthly snapshots.
Terminated MDLs
Recent reports provide Date Closed and a covered interval. Cumulative reports may provide only a termination year. Repeated appearances in overlapping reports do not establish additional closures. A termination does not establish settlement.
Archive Copies and Revisions
Original JPML hosting is preferred. Recovered archive copies identify the original JPML URL and capture date. Changed source files are retained as separate versions. A PDF can be available even when its figures have not passed the table checks.
Initial Panel Orders
Research links reviewed transfer orders for a limited current cohort. Order filing dates and initial assignments come from those PDFs; current judges, districts, and action counts come from the dated monthly report. An unlinked MDL has not yet been verified. Reviewed order sources ↗
Individual MDL History
Monthly facts retain their exact report date and source. Earlier titles remain searchable. The last monthly observation is not a termination date. Multiple rows remain separate; they are not added into an assumed MDL total. The observed peak is the highest single-row pending count in available reports, with the earliest tied date shown. It may not be the lifetime peak.
Cross-MDL Comparison
Compare two to four MDLs in calendar time or elapsed days since a verified initial centralization order was filed. Relative origins require a reviewed operative order and exact source page; neither the first monthly appearance nor a generic transfer date supplies an origin. Coverage is limited to the reviewed order cohort. Lines use actual source dates, retain gaps for absent listings, and do not add missing-month values. CSV exports retain dates, listing status, origin evidence, and monthly source identities.
Termination Lookup
Archive search always includes validated tables from the recent and cumulative termination reports. Identical excerpts share citations; differing reported facts remain separate. Letter-suffixed MDL identifiers are distinct. A reported year remains a year; unavailable columns remain unavailable. Monthly action counts and cumulative termination statistics are not combined, and neither absence nor a termination entry proves settlement or current status.

Measures and Limitations

Pending Actions
The pending count reported for an MDL on the source date.
Total Actions (Historical)
The report's cumulative total for its listed MDLs. National sums can fall when an MDL leaves the report.
Monthly Listings
“Not listed” indicates absence, not zero actions, termination, or settlement. “New MDLs” means first appearance in the available monthly data; it does not establish when an MDL was created.
Changes Between Months
Changes in reported actions do not establish filings, dispositions, terminations, or settlements. The net change combines count changes for MDLs listed in both months, actions in newly listed MDLs, and the subtraction of prior actions for MDLs no longer listed.
No Longer Pending
Calculated as Total actions (historical) minus Pending actions. It is not a separate JPML measure and does not establish closure, termination, dismissal, remand, or settlement.
Contribution Shares
In the Trends contributor tables, each change is divided by total gross movement: the sum of the absolute changes. Increases and decreases offset in the net, so its share need not equal 100%.
Observed Trends
Fits describe available counts. They do not establish MDL age, judicial speed, future filings, or case outcomes.
Percentage Change
No percentage is shown when the prior count is zero or the MDL was absent in the prior month.
Docket Verification
Only one distinct result with an exact MDL number and JPML court identity is linked. Ambiguous, unmatched, and unavailable checks remain unlinked. Each record retains its check date.
